Indian Railways has announced a big plan to modernize almost 100 Shatabdi Express and Jan Shatabdi Express trains in a bid to drastically improve passenger comfort, aesthetics and entire traveling experience. The project is one of several efforts to modernise some of the most famous premium trains in the country.
In an official directive sent on April 23, the Railway Board has asked all zones to ensure thorough inspection of the train rakes and come up with detailed action plans to the upgrades. It will mainly concentrate on the enhancement of the major passenger-related aspects, where these trains will comply with the increasing demands in the area of comfort, cleanliness, and reliability.
The upgrades suggested will involve redesigning washrooms to have better fittings, better flushing systems, better washbasins and better drainage. There will also be a makeover of the interiors, which will include an upgrade of coach panels, flooring, seating areas and areas around washrooms. Jerks will be minimized in the coaches and the quality of the vestibules, gangways and overhead panels will be improved to allow smoother travel.
Furthermore, the digital passenger information systems and CCTV surveillance will be modernized to make it safer and more convenient. Coach exteriors, such as window panes and destination boards, are also going to be renovated to enhance appearance.
According to the officials of the railways, the process of upgrading will start as soon as the zonal plans are completed. The relocation is an indication of the Indian Railways to modernise its core services as well as providing passengers with a more comfortable and technologically enhanced experience of travelling throughout the nation.
