Ahmedabad: No matter what tricks smugglers use, the Indian police manage to scrap their plans. In a joint operation, the Gujarat ATS and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence on Friday seized around 90 kgs of heroin worth Rs 450 crore from a shipping container that arrived at the Pipavav port in Amreli district.
Reportedly, the container that was shipped from Iran had threads soaked in Heroine, a modus operandi the drug indicate adopted to dodge scrutinization. The threads were soaked in heroin solution and then dried, made into bales and then packed in bags for export, Gujarat DGI said.
“The container, having large bags of threads, arrived at the Pipavav port from Iran nearly five months back. A forensic analysis of four suspicious bags having threads weighing nearly 395 kg revealed that the threads contained opiate derivative or heroin. In all, we found nearly 90 kg of heroin worth Rs 450 crore from those threads,” Mr Bhatia told reporters in Gandhinagar.
The bags were mixed with bags of normal bales to surpass the scanners, sources added. The case is being examined and seizure proceedings by the DRI under the provisions of the NDPS Act 1985 are underway.
