The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued an Election Roll Revision Special Order for 17 states and UTs ahead of the qualifying date of January 1, 2027. The idea behind the exercise was to make sure voters’ lists are correct and everyone who is eligible to vote is on them ahead of next elections.
The revision is early enough ahead of the Assembly elections set for a number of states early next year. One of the main aims is to register eligible voters, including young people and first-time voters; to dis-enrol duplicative voters and to remove deceased voters’ names.
The draft electoral rolls are going to be released on November 12 on the mutually agreed programme, the party announced. Until December 11, claims and objections can be submitted by all voters and qualified applicants.
The Election Commission has already announced January 4, 2027, for the issuance of the final electoral lists. The process will enable authorities to inspect the applications, resolve any objections and correct any mistakes prior to finalising the lists.
The revision is a key element to preparing voter results before the election cycle. Properly updated registration records makes sure that eligible voters are able to cast their votes and minimise registration errors.
The Commission’s exercise also offers a chance to newly eligible people to register to vote and existing voters to update their information. During the claims and objections period, the citizens have the opportunity to request rectifications or issue objections to the entries from the draft lists.
Other states and UTs which are going through or have recently completed the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) will be accorded their own timeline. The dates of their electoral roll revision process will therefore not be in line with the dates that have been announced for the 17 jurisdictions.
The Election Commission’s timeline outlines the critical milestones of the process, from draft rolls to final lists in January 2027. The process is designed to create new electoral lists in preparation for upcoming elections.
