INDIA: As the spread of coronavirus pandemic has now affected more than 5 lakh people in India, several states are looking for further extension of lockdown in those district which are fighting with this contagion virus.
States like Jharkhand, West Bengal have announced to extend the lockdown till July 31 and others like Tamil Nadu have clamped lockdown in a few worst-affected districts.
Maharashtra, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Telangana are among states which have decided to continue the lockdown till the end of June.
Here’s the list of the states to announce further lockdown
The Jharkhand government announced an extension of the lockdown till July 31 on Friday to contain the spread of COVID-19. “Considering the seriousness of the situation, the state government has decided to extend the lockdown till July 31,” Chief Minister Hemant Soren said in a tweet.
West Bengal government yesterday announced that the lockdown will be extended in the state till July 31. The timings of the night curfew has also been revised and it will remain in force between 10 pm and 5 am.
The Assam government has announced a 12-hour night curfew across the state and a 14-day complete lockdown in Kamrup (Metro) district, of which Guwahati city is a part, from June 28 midnight.
“We are now left with no choice but to impose a complete lockdown for 14 days from June 28 midnight, and this time it will be very strict as no grocery shops will be allowed to open or supply of vegetables and other essentials will be permitted for the first seven days,” Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told reporters in Guwahati.
The Tamil Nadu has put the districts of Chennai, Madurai and parts of Chengelpet, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur under lockdown since last Friday till June 30. On Saturday, Tamil Nadu reported over 3500 cases — highest ever from the state in a single day.
Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had already clarified that no further lockdown will be practiced in the National Capital. However, schools in Delhi will remain closed till July 31 but online classes and activities shall continue.
India’s tally of Covid-19 cases has surged beyond the 500,000-mark, while the death toll has climbed to 15,685 so far.
