West Bengal: The CBI is set to take up the murder case of Chandranath Rath, the personal assistant to then BJP legislative member now West Bengal CM- Suvendhu Adhikari. Officials reported that the CBI would officially take charge from the state police today.
As per a press release, a Special investigation team will be constituted to handle the case. The SIT will function under the supervision of the Joint Director/Head of Zone, Kolkata.
The investigation shift comes after 3 sharp shooters were arrested in UP by SIT constituted under the West Bengal police. The 3 are remanded to 13 day police custody after they were brought to West Bengal and produced before the court in North 24 Praganas district, officer said.
Previously a UPI payment led to the suspects. As per officials, the accused were in a silver car, which crossed the Bally toll plaza in Howrah just before the fatal shooting. The toll on the crossing was said to be paid using a UPI transaction.
“This is a breakthrough. The investigation indicated that the assailants were from outside West Bengal. Based on technical surveillance, digital tracking and other inputs, members of the SIT were sent to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. They arrested the three persons from UP and Bihar. They have been brought to West Bengal on transit remand,” the officer stated.
Though no arrests have been made so far, investigators remain confident that the digital trail and surveillance inputs will soon help crack the case and lead them to Chandranath Rath’s killers.
Chandranath was shot dead in Madhyamgram of North 24 Parganas district on the night of May 6, just two days after election result. He was killed by an unidentified 4 wheeler that intercepted him while returning home from a party programme.
