Congress was condemned by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for doubting the honesty of EVMs and challenging its leaders, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, to quit politics and vow to contest polls only after the return of ballot papers. On Saturday, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said that only such a move would show that the Congress party really believes in what it alleges regarding EVMs.
“We elected Congress government instead of listening to their rhetoric; without this commitment, their claims are mere lip service,” Bhatia said, suggesting that Congress should seek legal redress for its woes. He added that the Supreme Court has dismissed any forms of manipulation or fraud regarding the election commission and EVM in the recent past.
Bhatia also noted that Congress protested the electoral process on the day of using it to elect a new MP in the Wayanad constituency of Kerala, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. He had a jibe at the party, stating that the parties and the chief ministers who were elected through the same system they disdain should step down if they do not trust EVMs.
Bhatia also said that it will not be long before Congress is relegated to the dustbins of history. The comments were made at a time when the BJP headed the Mahayuti alliance and swept Maharashtra Assembly polls by winning 233 out of 288 constituencies. The BJP demanded 132 seats, out of which it secured the allies Shinde faction of Shiv Sena 57 and NCP Pawar faction 41.
On the same note, Congress has accused the Election Commission of irregularities such as vanishing vote between the vote cast and the vote counted. The Election Commission of India rubbished the claims and later invited a Congress delegation for a meeting on December 3. BJP has rejected these allegations, saying that there isn’t any truth to them, and this was a sour inference by Congress due to the recent losses in the polls.
