The death toll in Assam floods rose to 98 following confirmed reports of casualties from several affected districts across the state. The number of people impacted by the deluge declined to 1.55 lakh, according to an official bulletin.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the devastating floods have heavily impacted multiple regions, resulting in the loss of 57 males and 23 females, alongside 18 children (12 males and 6 females).

Among the hardest-hit areas, Cachar district has recorded 22 deaths, while Sivasagar has reported 10 fatalities. Other severely affected districts include Karimganj (9 deaths), Golaghat (6 deaths), along with casualties reported across Dhemaji, Nagaon, Udalguri, Sonitpur, and Karbi Anglong.

Thirteen districts — Sivasagar, Golaghat, Nagaon, Hojai, Sonitpur, Dhemaji, Darrang, Biswanath, Kamrup (M), Lakhimpur, Udalguri, Jorhat and Charaideo — continued to remain affected by floodwaters, impacting 33 revenue circles and 464 villages.

55 relief camps have beeb established where over 10,000 displaced people were taking shelter. Another 18 relief distribution centres were also functioning.

The Dhansiri River was flowing above the danger level at Golaghat town and Numaligarh, both in Golaghat district, and the Kushiyara in Sribhumi district. A crop area of 10,748.64 hectares remained submerged, while over 47,000 animals have been affected. Damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges and houses, has also been reported from the affected districts, the bulletin said.

Continuous extreme rainfall and the distinct bowl-shaped topography of the Brahmaputra valley are the primary reasons for the severe flood situation in Assam. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) explicitly ruled out a single cloudburst event. Instead, an exceptional multi-day precipitation spell saturated the neighboring hill catchments of Nagaland and upper Assam, causing severe downpours that forced south-bank tributaries like the Dikhow, Disang, Jhanji, and Dhansiri to swell rapidly and overflow.
