The director of BJP Tamil Nadu, K Annamalai, has vehemently attacked the DMK-led state government for amending the logo of the state budget for 2025-26, by replacing the Indian Rupee symbol (₹ or Rs) with the Tamil alphabet ‘Ru’. The move is “stupid”, he said, adding that the Chief Minister of MK Stalin’s government was ignoring a symbol made by a Tamilian which has since been adopted legally across the country.
In a tweet shared on X, Annamalai expressed his disapproval saying, “The DMK Government’s State Budget for 2025-26 replaces the Rupee Symbol designed by a Tamilian, which was adopted by the whole of Bharat and incorporated into our Currency. Thiru Udhay Kumar, who designed the symbol, is the son of a former DMK MLA. How stupid can you become, Thiru @mkstalin?”
The trouble began after the MK Stalin unveiled the new budget logo with the Tamil script symbolising ru instead of the Indian rupee symbol. However, the previous budget for the year 2024-25 had the standard Indian rupee symbol as its currency. On March 14, the Tamil Nadu assembly will be presented with the budget for 2025-26.
The development has caused a new political debate, piling on to ongoing tensions between the BJP and the DMK over language and identity issues. The row is in the midst of the larger controversy over the National Education Policy (NEP) and an opposition of the DMK to the Centre’s three-language policy. The fact is that Stalin’s government has stood adamantly against any propagation or substitution of Hindi whatsoever or change into Tamil Nadu’s linguistic identity.
The rupee symbol debate will also intensify political tensions in the state even further with the budget session round the corner, and there is also a deep fault line between the ruling DMK and the opposition BJP.
