INDIA: Uber has removed 600 employees in India due to the financial crunch this year. The pandemic has led to economic crisis in various sector. Most of the organizations are opting for job cuts or leave without pay for their employees.

Over 4,400 jobs cut by 5 major Indian companies in 1 month, In total, five companies — Uber India and South Asia, Ola, Zomato, Swiggy and Cure.fit — have together announced the reduction of around 4,441 jobs in the last one month.

The president of Uber India and South Asia, Pradeep Parameshwaram said that the ‘unpredictable future’ of India has left no choice to Uber India but to remove its employees to reduce the size of the workforce. He also expressed his gratitude towards the employees who had been a constant support in the pandemic. The sacked employees would receive their payment and six months of medical insurance. 


Aditi Srivastava, Business writer at economic times, took to Twitter to express that “JUST IN- @Uber India has laid off 600 employees today across functions, a week after rival Ola’s downsizing. Uber confirmed the development”. “All affected employees will receive a minimum 10 weeks payout, medical insurance coverage for the next six months, outplacement support, be allowed to retain their laptops and given the option to join the Uber talent directory – Uber said”, she added further.

 “The impact of Covid-19 and the unpredictable nature of the recovery has left Uber IndiaSA with no choice but to reduce the size of its workforce,” Pradeep Parameswaran, President, Uber India and South Asia said”, she mentioned.

The announcement of job cuts has led several employees jobless. The growth of unemployment has added another concern in the pandemic. The issue was raised when OLA announced that it has decided to lay off 1600 employees in the wake of coronavirus.
