Mumbai: After flooding the national capital of Delhi, the flood fury is now drenching Maharashtra. Heavy rains caused road closures, train cancellations, and school holidays across the western state. The Indian Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts and a yellow alert for the rest of the states. Earlier on Thursday, a landslide in Raigad killed 16, leaving 43 families trapped. As the NDRF team saved 64 lives, Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde announced compensation for the deceased.
As per the orders issued by Palghar collector Govind Bodke and his counterpart Ashok Shingare, schools and colleges in Thane and Palghar shall remain closed due to heavy rains. NDRF teams are on standby and Thane residents have been advised to stay indoors in view of the situation. The District Magistrate Office Palghar has given instructions to 23 NDRF teams to be ready. The DMO added that the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation has also been informed through a letter to remain alert and provide necessary assistance.
Over 100 local trains have been canceled in Mumbai. According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Colaba and Santacruz observatories recorded 98.4mm ad 52.8mm of rainfall respectively. The problems are aggravated as the collective water stock in the several reservoirs that supply drinking water to the city is now 39.61. With this, Mumbai’s vital water body, Tulsi Lake started overflowing.
