Maharashtra: At least 26 Maoists were killed in an encounter with police on Saturday in eastern Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district, almost 900 kilometres from Mumbai, according to senior officials.
The district Superintendent of Police Ankit Goyal said, “We have recovered the bodies of 26 naxals so far from the forest.” Mr Goyal said the gunfight occurred in the morning at Korchi in the Mardintola forest area, while a C-60 police commando unit led by additional SP Soumya Munde was conducting a search operation.
While the identities of the Maoists killed have yet to be revealed, sources suggest that one of them was a prominent rebel leader. Four police officers were also critically hurt in the incident and were flown to Nagpur for treatment, according to officials.
