The Devil Wears Prada 2 has made a strong opening at the international box office, grossing over the 200 million mark, in the course of its opening weekend and is reportedly recovering its production budget within only 24 hours. The dramedy, which stars Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, has also surpassed Michael to become the highest grossing movie at the North American box office.
The movie generated about 77 million dollars in North America within the first three days, according to industry tracker Comscore. Although a bit less than the initial estimates, the number was good enough to propel it ahead of its competitors. The biggest returns of the movie were however recorded in international markets where the movie earned an impressive amount of $156 million, which added its global opening to approximately 233 million dollars.
This performance makes it one of the biggest global openings of the year, second only to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and ahead of other major releases like Project Hail Mary. The film in Italy, one of the main fashion centers, has registered one of the highest openings in the history of the country, and this indicates that the film has a great thematic relationship with fashion world.
Box office analysts have remarked that such kind of success is not common to a dramedy, more so a sequel that is outperforming its predecessor. The release of the film has also created renewed interest in the original The Devil Wears Prada, with streaming viewership increasing by over 400% over the past few weeks.
Having a good word-of-mouth and international appeal, it is likely that the film will continue its momentum in the days to come.
