Mortal Kombat II started poorly on the global box office this weekend and was unable to topple The Devil Wears Prada 2 which is going strong in the cinemas for the return of Meryl Streep. The film had a relatively small opening, although it had massive anticipation from the fans for the video game adaptation sequel, which never materialized.
Mortal Kombat II is estimated to have grossed about $40 million in the opening weekend in North America, ranking second on the box office. Studio estimates put Mortal Kombat II in at around $40 million for the opening week in North America, second on the box office. The Devil Wears Prada 2 continued to hold the #1 spot in its second weekend with an impressive collection of $43 million, and is proving to be an extremely steady film, dropping just 44 percent from its opening week.
Analysts credit the timing of the release – on Mother’s Day weekend – as a plus for The Devil Wears Prada 2. Paul Dergarabedian, the box office analyst, referred to the release plan as “the perfect date,” and said this could be a template for future summer movies.
Meanwhile, the biopic Michael, which was much talked about, was third with $36 million in the third weekend. The film beat Mortal Kombat II just on Sunday with $13.2 million to the latter’s $9.5 million.
This was followed by a number of other new releases, too. The Sheep Detectives, which features Hugh Jackman and Emma Thompson, and a quirky mystery-comedy plot, came in fourth with $15.9 million, appealing to families.
Rounding off the top five was Billie Eilish, Hit Me Hard & Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D), where Billie Eilish performs an immersive concert experience, co-directed by James Cameron.
The film The Devil Wears Prada 2 has already grossed more than $433 million worldwide, and Michael is quickly nearing $600 million. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the biggest movie of the year so far, having grossed more than $941 million worldwide.
