Mohit Suri has explained that while speculation is mounting over the sequel to cult classic Awarapan, he has not been offered the directorship of Awarapan 2. The sequel, developed by Vishesh Films, has already sparked anticipation among fans, particularly with Emraan Hashmi reprising his role.
Suri said that his absence from the sequel was because he was not approached for the film. He said that while he has a deep friendship and working relationship with Hashmi, he has worked with him several times and so would like to take time to think over any new project. I have done eight films with Emraan. I can’t just take any role – I have to bring something to the table,” he said.
Suri said that due to their enduring collaboration, Hashmi is more than just a regular collaborator. He added that they both watched the same kinds of films growing up, which informed their cinematic tastes, particularly when it came to storytelling and music. He even called Hashmi his “first hero,” emphasising the deep bond that exists.
They have worked together since Zeher (2005), his first film as a director, and have starred in some of his biggest hits in Murder 2, Raaz: The Mystery Continues, and the original Awarapan. Several of these films were critically acclaimed, and commercially successful, earning them the tag of a ‘hit’ director-actor pairing.
Although Suri is not directing Awarapan 2, his statements reveal a friendship and respect, and an ongoing willingness to work with Hashmi if the right opportunity arises.
