Suriya and Trisha Krishna starrer Karuppu, reportedly crossed the Rs 300 crore mark previously hit by Varisu which earned Rs 297.55 crore at the world wide box office. Within just 8 days of its release, the RJ Balaji directorial crossed Rs 250 crore becoming the highest grossing Tamil film of 2026.
Amidst the film’s success, the director in a media interaction revealed Karuppu was originally intended to be Vijay’s final film before his full-time political entry. Talking about Vijay stepping away from the project, Balaji said, “I narrated this film first to Vijay sir. This was supposed to be his last film (before his full-fledged political entry). We had two or three meetings, and he heard the script. Since it was supposed to be his last film, there were a lot of things that he had to consider. He had another option with H Vinoth (director of Jana Nayagan). He then asked me if he could inform me in a week. He then called me and mentioned certain reasons (to turn down the project), which I felt were justified,” Balaji told.
“I replied, ‘Sir, I absolutely respect your decision.’ By then, I had narrated two scripts to him. I had previously narrated another film. Both times, I narrated the subjects to him because he asked me if I had something for him. I felt that showed his great respect for my work and, probably, my creativity,” the director added.
The fantasy action drama revolves around the guardian deity Vettai Karuppu, who disguises as an advocate to fight corruption within a legal system in connection to a case exploiting a young girl awaiting a liver transplant. Besides Surya and Trisha Indrans, Natty Subramaniam, Swasika, Sshivada and Supreeth Reddy are seen in key roles. Produced by Dream Warrior Pictures, Karuppu boasts a chartbuster soundtrack composed by Sai Abhyankkar.
Vijay who transitioned into politics this year will last be seen as an actor in Jana Nayagan. The film amidst his career shift has been stalled for 5 months. It reportedly awaits clearance from the CBFC after being referred to the revising committee days before its planned January release. The delay came after a member of the examining committee filed a complaint, following which the makers reportedly failed to receive relief from the courts.
The film also stars Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju and Bobby Deol in key roles.
