Cinema tracks indicate Daayra directed by Meghna Gulzar has opened on a soft note at the domestic box office with approximately Rs. 90 lakh India net grosses in the first day.

It’s the first time Kareena Kapoor has acted together on screen with Malayalam actor Prithviraj Sukumaran and had its release in the theatres on Friday. Despite that there was a lot of hype around the pair and Gulzar’s leadership, Daayra got off to a somewhat average start on day one.

According to the figures, the movie had a total Hindi occupancy of 11.65% on Friday with its performance in India in 2238 shows. Daayra is available in Hindi language and Malayalam, with the Hindi version bringing in the bulk of the box officefares during the initial day.

The Malayalam language filmed was adding only a small slice of the pie on Day 1 to the collection of India.

Daayra will be directed by Meghna Gulzar and features a police encounter that stands in a contentious rage with an horrific rape-murder case. It is a crime thriller in which two law enforcement officers are faced with a dilemma regarding the moral implications of the crime that they are coming to grips with the fallout.

The film themes include those of justice, policing and of the choices that difficult decisions are making for those who were involved in an controversial case. It features artists from the Hindi and Malayalam film industries, including Kareena Kapoor and Prithviraj Sukumaran.

Vibe also competed with Daayra for the same amount of time as it was released simultaneously. The film, which falls under comedy-action genre, features Preity Zinta and Sparsh Shrivastava opposite Kunal Kemmu, and will be directed by him.

Daayra has a modest opening day and will see audience levels improve on the weekend, which will see its box-office fortunes continue.
