A debut romantic action drama, Awarapan 2, has become the definite box office success of the Independence Day weekend, courtesy of Emraan Hashmi’s directorial debut. The film, which hit theatres on August 14, faced the challenge of Sunny Deol’s film Batwara 1947 which has been challenging the movie, however, the film continues to hold the upper hand on this competition.

These makers claim Awarapan 2 had opened with Rs 23.40 crore on Day 1 which was followed by Rs 34.09 crore on Saturday and Rs 26.82 crore on Sunday earning this production in India. The movie has had tremendous momentum since opening and is said to have made Rs 120.86 crore globally in its opening weekend.

The film had an overall theatre attendance rate of 52.83% on Sunday with a total of 9,403 theatres showing. Morning showed had 25.69 percent occupancy, followed by 60.38 percent, 68.62 percent and finally 56.62 percent during night shows. The occupancy rate in the Delhi-NCR clocked in at 55.8% with 947 shows while in Mumbai, it was 42.8% in the 751 shows.

The sequel has made a huge improvement compared to the original Awarapan’s box office performance. The 2007 movie was directed by Mohit Suri and faced a rough start, but has since found a devoted cult following. Within hours of its release, Awarapan 2 outdid the collection of Rs 7.75 crore that the original movie had achieved in its lifetime.

The sequel has also been keeping the back-to-back dominance of Batwara 1947 that has reportedly grossed a total of Rs 37.11 crore globally till date.

Awarapan 2, even though it has been a commercial success, has garnered a lukewarm reception in the critical discussion. Emraan Hashmi has been lauded for his acting abilities and the action scenes while some had criticized its “return” in the third act.

Emraan Hashmi, Disha Patani, Puran Gabbi, Aniruddh Rawal, Shabana Azmi, Suvinder Vicky, Vijayant Kohli, Atul Kumar have starred along with Nitin Kakkar behind the camera.
