This is a significant move by the government of India in granting permission to 15 foreign universities to set up their campuses in the country and provide international training. It is hoped that the first cohort will start classes in August.

The initiative will be targeted to bring internationally recognized and accepted degrees without having to go abroad for study to Indian students. Pupils studying at these schools will be issued with the same awards as their home universities abroad.

Officials also say that the new arrangements will create an additional savings account of as much as 30 to 40 per cent on the overall cost of acquiring an international education. The tuition, the cost of accommodation and general expenses of the student often associated with his/her study abroad can be saved enormously.

The approval comes as a part of the government’s initiatives to promote internationalization of India’s higher education system as per the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Foreign institutions are thus permitted to operate in India for better academic standards, research interaction and for students to have better opportunities for education.

The international Universities are expected to have curricula that are aligned to global standards, modern teaching methods, faculty who are international and similar academic standards to those of the home Universities. The move is expected to cut down Indian youth seeking higher studies abroad too.

Admission for the first academic year is expected to start soon, with the classes expected to begin in August. These institutions are expected to add to the competition, build the quality of higher education and provide India a more coveted educational hub.

The educational institutions and the admission process for the courses will be detailed in the coming weeks, it is hoped.
