Within hours on Tuesday, the Central Government removed the CBSE Chairman Rahul Singh and Secretary Himanshu Gupta from their posts in connection with a rapidly developing national debate over the recently implemented digital assessment system.

The sudden ouster of the CBSE Chairman and Secretary occurs as the national controversy continues to build over the new digital marking scheme. Alongside the move, the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions has formed a One-Member Committee for investigating the matter in its entirety.

The probe will be concentrated solely on the procurement process involving the OSM service. S Radha Chauhan, the Chairperson of the Capacity Building Commission, will chair the committee. A report on the investigation findings will be submitted to the DoPT within a month. “The entire question centers around whether there was any tampering with the procurement process and if the contract has been fairly awarded to the company which had the capacity to shape the academic futures of lakhs of children,” said opposition leaders.

This fiasco began when CBSE announced that the entire evaluation process of its Class 12 board examination would be conducted digitally through OSM, with the purpose of doing away with any potential errors caused due to manual tallying as well as the physical transportation of answer sheets. But the move was counterproductive, as many of those students who sought to see their evaluated answer papers found themselves facing serious problems such as heavily pixelated answer-book photos, answer sheets missing whole pages and an inability to make payments.

In certain cases, students claimed they were shown the answer book belonging to someone else altogether. With increasing levels of discontent among citizens and overburdened portals leading to crashes, the top technical minds at the IITs and IIMs were brought in to rectify the situation. It appears that all the damning revelations made along with the loose criteria for tendering ultimately pushed the government’s hand.
