Angul: In Odisha’s Angul district, Tapaswini Sahoo, a resident of Basala village, has been arrested for allegedly murdering her 3-month-old twin babies, a boy and a girl. Her husband, Sunil Kumar Sahoo, who runs a meat shop, reported the incident. The tragedy unfolded on Wednesday evening when, in the absence of family members, Tapaswini threw the infants into a well near their house. The husband discovered the gruesome act upon returning home.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer Ramakanta Mohalik revealed that the couple had celebrated the birth of the twins, conceived after 10 years of marriage. However, Tapaswini had been struggling with mental health issues in recent weeks, possibly contributing to the tragic incident. Mohalik emphasized the suspicion that her mental ailment might have led to the crime.
The family members disclosed that Tapaswini had been unwell and distressed for some time, indicating a potential link between her mental state and the horrific act. The twins, previously a source of joy for the family, became victims of their mother’s distress.
Furthermore, the family mentioned that Tapaswini exhibited irritation when the babies cried at night. This detail raises concerns about her ability to cope with the challenges of motherhood and underscores the importance of mental health support for new mothers.
The arrest followed a complaint from Sunil Kumar Sahoo, who likely faced a heartbreaking revelation upon returning home to find his newborn twins floating in the well. The tragic incident sheds light on the pressing need for mental health awareness and support, especially within the context of postpartum challenges that mothers may face. Investigations will likely delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the crime, focusing on the mental well-being of the accused and the potential societal factors contributing to such distressing incidents.
