Temba Bavuma from South Africa showed great fortitude amid confusion when the visitors were bowled out for just 153 in their second innings, setting India a target of 124 to win the first Test at Eden Gardens. Bavuma fought very hard to make his 55, because things were beginning to collapse with the other South Africa batting positions under sustained pressure.

The Kolkata pitch has posed a very good mystery for the batters throughout. The pace attack was dancing with each delivery because of its inconsistent bounce, which made life impossibly demanding for spin bowlers from the sharp turn and extra bounce. We have had a thriller at hand with a total even looking to be defendable.

On Day 2, South Africa presented a disaster with the bat, resuming at 93/7 in 35 overs, ahead by 63 runs. Not only largely due to the will and determination of Bavuma, but they also managed to get past 100 runs and continued to collapse overall. India struggled as well earlier when they batted. Resuming their first innings at 37/1, KL Rahul and Washington Sundar pushed steadily from 37 to 75 runs before the momentum shifted violently.

When Simon Harmer joined the bowling attack for South Africa, India were already out of their attacking position in this match.
