On Friday, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor called Bihar Assembly elections results “very disappointing” and noted that the Mahagathbandhan’s performance was a matter for “serious introspection.” Results showed a decisive mandate for former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s NDA, winning 198 seats, while the Mahagathbandhan garnered only 39 seats. The BJP emerged as a single largest party, winning 89 seats and solidifying the NDA’s position further.

Speaking to reporters in Thiruvananthapuram, Tharoor said the numbers showed the “lead was overwhelmingly with the NDA,” and added the opposition alliance’s expectations made the results hard to accept. Tharoor said, while final results hadn’t yet been announced, the trend was clear and troubling for them.

Tharoor pointed out the need for the M to take a look at what didn’t resonate, the campaign, outreach, message, organisation, or connecting to voters on important issues. Tharoor made note he hadn’t been invited to campaign in Bihar, a point that could be a matter debate for the party on leadership decisions and feasibility of resources for campaigning in the elections.
