The visit of the External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to Canada on November 12 to attend the G7 Foreign Ministers Meeting in Ontario is an important step in bringing normalcy back in the damaged India Canada relations. The visit will be made on the request of Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand who will host Jaishankar and other outreach partners, who are Australia, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, South Korea, South Africa and Ukraine.

The External Affairs Ministry of India said that Jaishankar was involved to signify India still devotes to work with the international community on crucial global matters and raise the voice of the Global South in international forums. He should also conduct a number of bilateral meetings on the margins of the G7 discussions, which will majorly be concerned with urgent economic issues and global security.

The visit becomes important because it comes after attempts by both sides to restore diplomatic ties that had reached a new low in 2023 when the former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of supplying Indians in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India had rejected the accusations as preposterous, though the scandal plunge the relationship to its lowest point in years.

However, in recent months, one can notice the visible signs of reconciliation. India and Canada have newly appointed new high commissioners to each other capitals in September that sounded an indicator of willingness to restore confidence. Jaishankar and Anand have also had two meetings within the past two months one at the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York and also when Anand visited New Delhi.

After these interactions, the two countries developed a roadmap of reestablishing bilateral relations and settled on the decision to restart the negotiation of the trade relations and the collaboration in the area of investments. The next visit by Jaishankar will be seen as a step forward in this process and India being willing to play a constructive role with Canada and the international community at large.
