Bhanu Thakur, her husband, is an IAS officer who is also accused of domestic violence, physical assault, illegal confinement, and threats by Bharti Dixit, an IAS officer, in years past. Investigated by the FIR submitted at the SMS Hospital police station, Jaipur on November 7, the alleged pattern of continued abuse had started shortly after they were married.
Reports claim that Dixit who is presently a Joint Secretary in the Finance Department said that she was forcibly married to Modi who is a Director in the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment. Both officers have the 2014 Rajasthan cadres. In the complaint Dixit has claimed that Modi had exploited her when emotionally distressed when her father was fighting cancer and lied to her prior to their marriage.
Dixit argued that she was mentally and physically harassed every time since marriage. The circumstances are reportedly getting worse after some time with Modi being assaulted under the influence of alcohol and tampering with her safety whenever she would enquire about his actions or whether he was a criminal subject to whom he was allegedly connected.
The FIR also adds that their violence escalated following the birth of their daughter in the year 2018. Since she was abused repeatedly, Dixit had to temporarily move out of Jaipur but later came back when her maternity leave was over in the hope that they would reunite. The alleged harassment, however, did not stop.
She further claimed that Modi was illegally imprisoning her and spying on her personal communication. The police are already on an investigation of the charges and the statements of both parties are likely to be captured in the near future.
The case has been a shocking experience to the Rajasthan bureaucracy with concerns over workplace and domestic abuse even in the upper hierarchy of the civil services being raised. An additional investigation will require the results of the police investigation.
