Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju announced that the next Winter Session of Parliament would begin on December 1 and will conclude on December 19, 2025. President Droupadi Murmu approved the recommendation, Rijiju confirmed on X (formerly Twitter). The minister added, “Looking forward to a constructive & meaningful Session that strengthens our democracy and serves the aspirations of the people.”
The Winter Session was called last year from November 25 to December 20. The current timetable will mean this year’s session is slightly delayed and shorter. The announcement has sparked criticism from the Opposition, which charged the government is purposely shortening discussions in Parliament. Congress’ Rajya Sabha Chief Whip Jairam Ramesh tweeted, “The Winter Session will be from December 1st till 19th. This is a ridiculous delay and truncation, just 15 working days. The government clearly has no business to transact, no Bills to get passed, and no debates to be permitted.”
Similarly, Trinamool Congress’ Rajya Sabha leader Derek O’Brien claimed the government is “scared to face Parliament.” O’Brien tweeted, “PM @narendramodi and team continue to suffer from the acute condition called Parliament-ophobia, a morbid fear of facing Parliament. 15-day Winter Session announced. Setting dubious records.”
This session will mark another significant event in the legislative calendar as newly-elected Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan acts as the Chairman in the Rajya Sabha for the first time. Observers will also be watching closely for any signs of how he conducts himself and interacts with opposition members, particularly against the backdrop of growing political tensions.
The session will follow the recently concluded Bihar Assembly election, which will contribute to the political tone and provide some ideas for game plans of the major parties in the session. The Winter Session will feature energetic and assertive exchanges and climates, similarly to the political calendar, which is similarly busy.
