On Friday, South Korea military said that North Korea launched a possible ballistic missile into its eastern waters and this was another addition to the weapons testing program by Pyongyang, with no progress in the diplomatic negotiations with Washington and Seoul.

According to the reports made by the Joint Chiefs of staff in South Korea, the missile was fired on an inland location in the west county of Taekwan and flew across the country before hitting the sea on the east coast. The information concerning the range of the missile and its flight altitude has not been disclosed yet. The South Korean military in its turn has increased the level of monitoring and preparedness and liaised closely with the United States and Japan, to track any further launch.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said that the missile was seen to hit the exclusive economic zone of Japan, and had no reported damage. Tokyo is still evaluating its launch with its allies. The country of North Korea, up to date, has not made any confirmation or statement as to the firing.

This recent addition is just one in an increasing number of provocations. During recent weeks, North Korea has conducted a series of tests with some of the latest weapon systems such as hypersonic and cruise missiles allegedly, claiming the need to provide nuclear deterrence to the country. At the beginning of this week, South Korea said that Pyongyang launched 10 artillery rounds into its western waters when U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth visited Seoul.

It is also followed by a missile launch shortly after a summit between South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Chinese President Xi Jinping in which President Lee urged Beijing to do more to get Pyongyang back to the negotiating table. In the meantime, the U.S. Defense Secretary Hegseth praised South Korea in his security discussions in Seoul on Tuesday following the announcement of the country that it will be spending more on defense in response to the increased North Korean threats and the dynamics in the region.
