West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday denied strongly the media reports that she herself received enumeration forms of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, given by a Booth Level Officer (BLO). The Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader labeled the reports as entirely false, misinformed, and an evasive measure towards misinformation.
Banerjee clarified a day after the numerous media reports including the Jago Bangla the mouth piece of the TMC had carried that the chief minister herself had accepted the enumeration forms at her Kalighat house, Kolkata. Going to Facebook Banerjee came up with a detailed statement denying the claims, and he pointed out that there was no such incident like that described.
Banerjee explained that a BLO had paid us a visit yesterday on the discharge of electoral business. He arrived at the office at my home, asked how many people were voters in the premises, and gave out forms. Nevertheless, part of the media has posted that I got out of my house and took the enumeration forms in my hand. This is totally false, deceptive and it is an effort to pass misinformation.
The chief minister, a very outspoken opponent of the Election Commission of India, (ECI) regarding the SIR process in West Bengal, renewed her own objection of what she termed as the biased application of the revision process. She also stated that she would not file any form until all the citizens of the state have been provided with a chance to fill their own.
This is an indication of Mamata Banerjee, who remains opposed to the ECI dealing with the electoral roll revision, which she says is not transparent and fair. This statement also brings to focus the increasing political tensions in West Bengal before the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections because the ruling TMC and the opposition engage in a back and forth over the validity of electoral procedures in the state.
