New Delhi. Every year on November 3, World Jellyfish Day is celebrated around the world. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of these ancient, amazing and often misunderstood creatures in the marine ecosystem. Jellyfish, also known as ‘sea jellies’, have existed on Earth for millions of years – believed to date back to the age of dinosaurs.

Why is this day celebrated?

Jellyfish Day began in 2014. The day aims to focus attention on the diversity of these invertebrate aquatic creatures, their ecological importance, and the impacts of climate change on the marine environment. This also marks the time when jellyfish begin to migrate toward the coasts of the Northern Hemisphere.

Jellyfish are not fish: Despite the word “fish” in their name, jellyfish are not fish. They do not have bones, a heart, lungs, or a brain. They are invertebrates.
