New Delhi: The Delhi State Election Commission has announced the dates for by-elections in 12 Municipal Corporation (MCD) wards. According to a release issued by the Commission on Tuesday, voting for the by-elections will be held on November 30, while the counting of votes will take place on December 3. The process of filing nominations for the by-elections will begin on November 3. Voting will take place on November 30 from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. The Commission said that extensive security arrangements will be made to ensure that the entire voting process is completed in a peaceful, fair and safe manner.
Of these 12 wards, the first nine were held by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while the remaining three were held by councillors from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). These councillors vacated their councillor positions (and their ward seats) after becoming MLAs in the Delhi Assembly elections held in February, and by-elections are being held to fill those vacant seats.
The Dwarka-B ward fell vacant after BJP leader Kamaljeet Sehrawat was elected as an MP. Sehrawat won the West Delhi Lok Sabha seat. The Shalimar Bagh-B ward fell vacant when senior BJP leader and former mayor Rekha Gupta served as a councillor. The BJP claims it will win the by-election “one-sidedly,” while the Aam Aadmi Party claims the public will now vote for “politics of work” in the MCD as well.
One-sided results will come – Virendra Sachdeva
BJP state president Virendra Sachdeva has said that the results of these by-elections will be “one-sided, completely in favor of the BJP.” Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has stated that it is confident of increasing its number of councillors in the MCD after these by-elections. They have argued that over the past eight months, the people of Delhi have seen that the BJP-led alliance and the formation of the ‘triple engine’ government have given a new direction to development and governance – based on this, the public can now choose “politics of work” in the MCD as well.
