On Monday morning, a huge blaze of fire erupted at a vegetable market in Bhatapara, leaving traders and locals in chaos and panic. The fire propagates at a very high rate within several minutes, completely covering the market area. The eyewitnesses reported that the fire spread fast because of the existence of plastic baskets and other inflammable products kept in huge numbers within the shops. With the swift passing of black smoke, the sky was soon filled, and the surrounding area was enveloped in thick black smoke, rendering visibility hard.
When news about the accident reached the fire brigades located in Bhatapara Municipality and the district headquarters, they came to the level to contain the flames. Firefighters relentlessly strived to keep the flames under control so that they would not extend to neighboring shops and residential places. Though the cause of the fire remains to be established, preliminary investigations into this matter indicate that a short circuit might have caused the fire.
Such leaders as Municipal President Ashwini Sharma, the former MLA Shiv Ratan Sharma, and other representatives of the population came to the rescue and relief location to monitor the situation. The police officers were also sent to control the crowd and ensure safety in the vicinity.
It has been estimated that traders have lost several lakhs of rupees as huge amounts of vegetables, plastic crates, and various merchandise were entirely burnt during the fire. A lot of small traders were observed standing powerless as their stalls were gutted down and lamenting at the fact that their lives had collapsed at such short notice.
At this point, the teams of fire brigade personnel are still working to fully extinguish the rest of the fire and allow the affected zone to cool down to avoid re-ignition. The administration has promised to have an investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire, and actions will be taken to tighten the safety measures in the market to prevent such an occurrence at a later date.
