New York City’s Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani reached out to the Hindu-American community on the occasion of Diwali. During this, Mamdani launched a scathing attack on Indian PM Narendra Modi and his party BJP. Mamdani, who had called PM Modi a ‘war criminal’ a few months ago, visited several Hindu temples in Queens, New York and while defending his statements, said only that I am from that India which celebrated diversity.

Addressing the Hindu-American community, Mamdani said, “I have been critical of PM Modi because the India I grew up in was a pluralistic India, where people of all religions lived together. My criticism is against PM Modi and the BJP’s idea that India only has space for certain kinds of Indians.” He said that pluralism should be celebrated and strived for.

He said, “I know I’m running for mayor of New York City, a city of eight and a half million people. Many people here may have different opinions about Prime Minister Narendra Modi than I do. That’s their right, and I will represent everyone equally because it’s my duty to ensure every New Yorker feels safe and comfortable living in this city.”

Zohran Mamdani is the Democratic candidate for mayor of New York City. His mayoral hopes have risen after winning the Democratic mayoral primary earlier this year. According to recent polls, Mamdani leads his independent candidate rival and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo by 13 percentage points. However, his lead has narrowed in recent weeks. If third-place Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa withdraws from the race, the race could become even more challenging for Mamdani.
