On Wednesday, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor defended his past statements about the “silence” of the Indian-American diaspora on matters of consequence for India-US relations, seemingly to shore up his previous comments. He endorsed a letter from a group of United States Congress individuals to President Donald Trump asking him to reset bilateral ties with India, terming the letter “delightful” and commending the obligation to lawmaking representing the U.S. wishes to reset (bilateral) laws with India.

In a tweet, Tharoor pointed out that his earlier comments on the silence of the diaspora were well-meaning and intended to signify sadness that they are not being sufficiently activist in reaching out to political representatives with priority to significant issues. If important American politicians can speak up on their own, it can still affect U.S. policy for the betterment of its relations with India regardless of whether there is, or is not, pressure from the diaspora.

Tharoor’s comments come weeks since he questioned the diaspora members’ silence surrounding important matters that impact Indians, such as 50% tariffs imposed on Indian imports, the astronomical $100,000 H-1B visa fee hike and the administration’s rethinking the visa allocation process. He expressed the need for the diaspora to act pro-actively helping to protect India’s interests abroad.
