Israeli forces, who left some areas of Gaza last week as part of a deal to secure the release of the last remaining hostages, have indicated that Hamas was quick to move its security people into those areas vacated by Israeli forces. This statement is designed to demonstrate its authority and that it still considers itself the governing authority in the enclave. In conjunction, Hamas has also handed over the bodies of four more Israeli captives to the Red Cross, with a total of eight hostages dead and returned. About 20 more bodies remain to be believed to be in Gaza.
In retaliation, Israel has reduced the number of trucks of aid that were allowed into the Strip to half of what was previously decided and has delayed the opening of the Rafah Crossing, blaming this on the slow handover of the dead hostages. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump sent a warning message to Hamas to disarm the group, and stated that if it did not disarm, it would forcibly disarm Hamas.
Since the war erupted in October 2023, Israeli bombardments have killed at least 67913 Palestinians and injured more than 170,000. In Israel, there were at least 1,139 killed during the attacks on October 7, and there were also about 200 people who were kidnapped.
Tensions are not limited to the battlefield. Mohammed Asaliya, a Palestinian, was recently released.
