The sudden death of Assamese star singer Zubeen Garg on September 19 in Singapore has shocked his fans, the music fraternity and the country. Garg is reported to have drowned during his swimming trip to Singapore to take part in an event that was dedicated to 60 years of India-Singapore diplomatic relations, a fact that has caused a number of questions to be raised.

After his demise, the police then arrested his manager, Siddhartha Sharma, and festival chief organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta in Delhi. They have been found guilty of culpable homicide, which is not murder, criminal conspiracy and causing death by negligence. The series of events preceding the drowning incident is also under investigation by the investigators as more inconsistencies and concerns keep arising.

Recently, Garima Saikia Garg, the wife of Zubeen, publicly challenged the role and responsibility of the manager. She did not address Sharma directly, but she was very troubled by the conditions that had caused the death of her husband. “Why was he not taken care of in his manager was present?” She was quoted as saying, “We have lost our cultural icon.”

Garima alleged that Zubeen had been on consecutive tours and ought not to have been given any physical activity. She claimed that he went swimming and was on a picnic, though he was drained and he had not said anything on the same day or the previous day. She also wanted to know whether he had been given his prescribed medication, and by implication, it could be that he had been taken along with no care or not enough of it. He generally slept in the daytime; either he was forcibly taken, said she.

Singapore officials, nonetheless, have ruled foul play, claiming that the 52-year-old singer drowned in the waters of St John’s Island and was taken to Singapore General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

It is still under investigation, and additional information is likely to be forthcoming in the next few weeks.
