The latest ragging incident that occurred at the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV), has assumed a dramatic turn after the Anti-Ragging Committee exposed shocking facts. The investigation has shown that the problem was much bigger than sometimes constant harassment: older students supposedly would organise a scheme of fake social media accounts and protest planning following the example of Gen-Z demonstrations in Nepal.
The committee report indicated that first-year students were coerced by higher-level students to make up false Gmail and Twitter accounts. They were not allowed to leave without opening at least two Twitter accounts and were told to retweet tweets as posted by seniors. This was meant to rally the content online and attract massively digital backing. The elders also threatened to stage protests like those witnessed in Nepal in case their orders were not met.
According to the report, an event was organised at the Shiv Sagar Restaurant, whereby first-year students were forced to use their personal Gmail accounts and new accounts that they had formed using fake identities to socialise. These efforts were allegedly headed by senior student Aman Patel. Fresher Vivek Sharma was called at his behest to make sure that every related chat on WhatsApp was deleted so that evidence of communication could be destroyed.
Moreover, there is another WhatsApp chat, called Senior Introduction, that was established with the purpose of putting pressure on newcomers via Ragging. Individuals in this group were said to have given veiled threats to those who did not obey orders and promised to subject them to the consequences of batch out-in other words, to the penalty of being kicked out of their academic group or year.
The probe found some of the senior students who participated in the planning and intimidation, such as Aman Patel, Adarsh Makwana, Aditya Sharma, Sunil Ahirwar, Naman Pandey, Yashasvi Mishra, and Dhawal Chaudhary. The results of the committee indicate that this is not a simple case of ragging by individuals but a planned and coordinated effort to control and take advantage of junior students.
