The Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) reported that Gujarat on Sunday afternoon experienced a weak tremor that was felt in its Kutch district with a magnitude of 3.1 on the Richter scale. The earthquake was felt at 12:41 p.m. and the epicentre was 12 kilometres north-east of Bhachau.

The ISR reported a smaller 2.6 magnitude tremor that had hit the district at about 6:41 a.m., and its epicentre was 24 kilometres east-southeast of Dholavira. Though these tremors ensued, the local authorities assured that life and property were not harmed, and residents were not mostly affected.

Kutch, located in a very high-risk seismic region, is one that is susceptible to low-intensity earthquakes. Although the tremors that hit the region recently were not very major, the area has experienced catastrophic earthquakes in the past, with the most notable one being the 2001 Kutch earthquake. This was one of the most devastating events in India in the last two centuries that took the lives of about 13,800 people and injured about 1.67 lakh people, as well as causing massive destruction to towns and villages.

The district disaster management authorities have also warned the residents to be alert and be ready for any seismic event, highlighting that small tremors are normal in the area. As much as these are low-intensity activities, people are supposed to be careful and adhere to safety measures at all times.

Seismologists keep the region under the eye with tremor patterns as they seek to gain more insights into the seismic activity of the region. Since the Kutch is located in one of the most seismic-prone areas in India, frequent monitoring and awareness of the general population are crucial in reducing the risks that might be caused by future seismic events.
