It was a historic moment when Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the first-ever railway line in Mizoram, the Bairabi-Sairang stretch, which opened the way to more towns within this state to connect with the rest of India. It was also accompanied by the inauguration of the newly completed Sairang railway station and the flagging off of the maiden Rajdhani Express of Mizoram between Aizawl and Delhi, which took through in an online setting (Lengpui Airport) because of bad weather.
To the people of Mizoram, Modi regretted that he was unable to attend the programme at the Sipai Lammual at Aizawl, but assured them, “I can have your love and affection through this medium. He noted that the new line would provide the opportunity in the healthcare, education, trade, tourism, and industry sectors to enhance the regional development and make Mizoram more connected to the national mainstream.
Modi inaugurated two other long-course trains, along with the Rajdhani Express, Sairang-Guwahati Express and Sairang-Kolkata Express. It will be the first year that Mizoram will be linked to Delhi through the Rajdhani Express. This will transform the lives of the people, as well as their livelihoods. It will introduce larger markets to farmers and businessmen, he said.
The BairabiSairang railway line was opened by June 2025 after almost twenty years and offered connectivity between the Assam-Mizoram border to Bairabi and Sairang, which is close to Aizawl. The empennery marvel consists of 48 tunnels, which are 12.85 kilometres, 55 major bridges, 87 minor bridges, five road overbridges and nine road underbridges. It is interesting to note that Bridge No. 196 is 104 metres high.
Through this project, Aizawl would be the fourth Northeast one to be linked to a national railway system – a move that would greatly enhance trade, travel and communication.
