In the early hours of Saturday, three engineering students died and eight others were injured in a tragic road accident in the Rajkot district of Gujarat following an overturning of their SUV on a state highway.
It happened in the vicinity of the village of Jangvad (Jasdan taluka) at around 1:30 a.m. when a group of students of RK University, Rajkot, were on their way to the coastal town of Diu on a holiday. Police said that a total of 12 students were in the rented SUV.
According to Inspector R.S. Sakaria of Atkot police station, the dead people were identified as Naresh Kodavati (19), Mothi Harsha (17), and Afrid Syed (17), who were all residents of Andhra Pradesh. Their bodies are taken to Rajkot Civil Hospital to undergo a postmortem.
Early research showed that the student at the wheel of the vehicle lost control of the car as he maneuvered around a corner on the state highway. The SUV rolled over, resulting in the immediate death of three students and injuring others. Two of the injured were later released after treatment, having sustained a fracture. The other students are recuperating under medical care.
According to the police authorities, the group had embarked on a late-night trip to Diu, a tourist spot in the country, when the accident took place. The mishap came as a shock to the university and Andhra Pradesh state, with authorities offering their regrets to the families who lost their loved ones.
This is a sad reminder of how dangerous traveling late at night and driving too fast on roads can be. Police are probing whether careless driving or fatigue was the cause of the accident. In the meantime, the bodies of the dead students are being sent back to their native Andhra Pradesh.
The Gujarat police have encouraged drivers, especially young travelers, to be cautious and observe the safety norms during night driving.
