Mitchell Starc has now officially retired from T20 Internationals, claiming the requirement to concentrate on the demanding test schedule in Australia and the ODI World Cup of 2027. A pacer, the 35-year-old, made his debut in T20Is in 2012 and played 65 games in the format and was a member of the winning team at the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE. Starc has announced his final appearance at the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean, and has already retired six months before the next, which will be hosted in India and Sri Lanka. He is also the second-best wicket taker in Australia, irrespective of the game, and in T20Is, he has taken 79 wickets, with 4 for 20 being his best against the West Indies in 2022.
Starc said that test cricket was and always remained the number one priority. “I have enjoyed every second of every T20 match I have represented Australia, especially the 2021 World Cup, not only because we won, but also the great team and the enjoyment during the journey.” Starc stressed that the break of the T20Is will help him be refreshed, fit and in top form to take on the next set of Test series, the Ashes, and the ODI World Cup in 2027.
After mid-2026, Australia has a busy Test program, with a home series against Bangladesh, a tour of South Africa, a four-match series against New Zealand, five Tests in India in January 2027, the 150th-anniversary Test against England at the MCG, and an away Ashes series in mid-2027. South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia will host the ODI World Cup in 2027, and Australia will come in as world champions.
