On Tuesday, Union Minister and the Rajya Sabha Leader of the House, JP Nadda, and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge were involved in a sharp exchange of words in parliament on the demand made by the opposition to have a discussion over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. The face-off followed soon after the House reassembled on a day in the Chair of Sasmit Patra, as the Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya explained the legislative business.

Kharge rose to the speaker to insist that the government permit a debate on the SIR, claiming that the exercise was causing previously cast votes by Dalits, Adivasi, minorities, poor, and other deprived strata of society to be deleted. He blamed the government for killing democracy and the Constitution through its refusal to speak to the issue. Kharge said that they ought to allow debate; otherwise, they will kill Parliament and democracy, and that the SIR had originated in Bihar, and with time, it will now be followed in Assam, Bengal, and throughout.

The LoP also blamed the BJP for being elected by ripping off the votes, with the BJP being termed as a chori ki Sarkar or a stolen government. His comment led to a deafening sloganeering by the opposition MPs who supported his call to debate. Kharge claimed that the Opposition was keen that Parliament should operate and deliberate on burning national concerns, but claimed that the government was evading deliberation.

Sharply countering, JP Nadda said the Opposition was acting in an obstructionist way and did not believe in healthy democracy. According to him, the government was willing to negotiate any issue, but within the rules and regulations of the constitution. Nadda further accused the Opposition of a conscious effort to thwart proceedings and said, “We will not tolerate obstructionism and anarchism. That will be a parliament operating by the rules.”
