During the gunfight that entered its ninth day on Saturday, at least two security personnel were killed in overnight firing in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district that saw one of the longest anti-terror operations in the Valley in recent years. The Chinar Corps of the Army noted the names of the two soldiers as Lance Naik Pritpal Singh and Sepoy Harminder Singh, who would be remembered due to their courage and commitment.
“Their valour and their devotion will never be forgotten. The Indian Army conveys its heartfelt condolences and shares its sympathies with the afflicted families. Ongoing operation,” said the Chinar Corps in an official post on Saturday.
Eleven security personnel have been injured since the initiation of the operation. The gunfight that had started on August 1 was triggered following a particular intelligence input pertaining to the existence of terrorists in a forested area in the Akhal region of South Kashmir in Kulgam district. Two terrorists have been killed so far in the encounter that is still going on.
Dubbed the code name Operation Akhal, the joint operation involves the Army, the Jammu and Kashmir Police, and other security agencies. Sophisticated monitoring gadgets such as drones and helicopters are being deployed to spy on the activities of the terrorists lurking in the thick forests. Elite commando forces such as the para commando have also been called in to aid ground forces in pinpointing and eradicating those left behind.
The operation is strictly monitored by the top-ranking security officials, such as Jammu and Kashmir Police chief Nalin Prabhat and Northern Commander, Lt Gen Pratik Sharma.
Since the pursuit is quite tough due to the rugged terrain as well as how long the confrontation has lasted, the security forces are now bent on ensuring that they thoroughly root out the menace in the area. The situation is being followed up very closely, and updates can be expected as the operation evolves.
