The inquiry group that was investigating the fatal Air India aircraft accident in Ahmedabad handed over the initial report of the inquiry to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, claimed sources quoted by a news agency. The accident, which was reported on June 12, 2025, entailed the crashing London-bound Air India aircraft after takeoff at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. It crashed into a hostel complex in the populous Meghaninagar region, where 241 passengers and crew on the aircraft were killed, together with a few on the ground. The sole survivor of the unfortunate incident was revealed to be not travelling in the plane, according to the probe.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is in charge of the investigation, and its investigation panel comprises a panel of technical experts, Indian Air Force officers, officers of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and a panel of U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) officers. This is so because the aircraft was designed and made in the United States, and therefore, the NTSB was engaged. The investigating probe is directed by the Director General of AAIB, and it also introduces an expert on aviation medicine as well as an Air Traffic Control (ATC) officer.
Another big success of the investigation was the effective retrieval and recovery of the cargo from the aircraft’s black boxes. The Crash Protection Module (CPM) was identified and retrieved from the front black box. On June 25, the memory module was opened successfully at the AAIB Laboratory in Delhi, with the help of a so-called golden chassis (a copy of the module to ensure that the correct data was retrieved). On June 13, one of the black boxes was discovered in a wreck on the rooftops, and the other one was discovered in the wreck on June 16.
It is the first occasion that India has been able to do the entire black box analysis locally, courtesy the new AAIB Lab in Delhi, which means recorders no longer have to be sent outside to be decoded. Boeing and GE representatives are also helping in the current technical examination.
The probe report is yet to be released officially to the public, but it is expected to be out soon.
