RIO DE JANEIRO: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday issued a strong call for comprehensive reforms of global governance institutions, asserting that these bodies have consistently failed to address the concerns and interests of the Global South. Speaking at the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Modi emphasized the urgent need for a more equitable and representative international system, particularly in an era of escalating global challenges.

Addressing a session focused on peace, security, and global governance reform, the Prime Minister stated that existing institutions have not only denied the Global South a rightful place at the decision-making table but also demonstrated an inability to resolve conflicts, tackle health and economic crises, and navigate emerging challenges in cyberspace and outer space.

PM Modi shared glimpse from the Summit and wrote on X, “Addressed the BRICS Summit Plenary session on ‘Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs, and Artificial Intelligence.’ Focused on how to make the BRICS platform even more effective in this increasingly multipolar world. Also gave a few suggestions which are explained in the thread below”.

Modi delivered a scathing critique of key international bodies, including the UN Security Council, the World Trade Organization (WTO), and multilateral development banks. He highlighted their stagnation, noting that they have not undergone significant reforms in 80 years. Furthermore, he accused these institutions of applying “double standards” against the Global South, offering “nothing more than token gestures” when it comes to crucial issues like climate finance, sustainable development, and technology access.

“Whether it is about development, distribution of resources or security-related issues, the interests of the Global South have not been prioritised,” Prime Minister Modi stated in Hindi, underscoring the systemic neglect faced by a significant portion of the world’s population. He stressed that without meaningful representation and a genuine shift in priorities, global governance structures will remain ineffective and lack credibility in addressing the complex challenges of the 21st century.
