MUMBAI: Anurag Basu’s much-anticipated “Metro… In Dino,” a spiritual successor to his 2007 cult hit “Life In A Metro,” has opened to a rather subdued response at the Indian box office on its opening day, Friday, July 4th. Despite a star-studded ensemble cast featuring Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Ali Fazal, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Neena Gupta, Anupam Kher, Pankaj Tripathi, and Konkona Sen Sharma, the film managed to collect an estimated ₹3.35 – ₹3.50 crore net on its first day.
These figures, while a respectable start for a non-action, dialogue-driven ensemble film, are certainly not the kind of numbers typically expected from a movie positioned as a sequel to a beloved and critically acclaimed predecessor. “Life In A Metro”, though it had a modest opening of ₹80 lakh, eventually went on to become a sleeper hit, demonstrating the power of strong word-of-mouth.
According to early estimates, “Metro… In Dino” saw a relatively slow start with morning and afternoon shows but picked up momentum significantly during the evening and night screenings, particularly in metro cities. Cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, and the National Capital Region (NCR) showed higher occupancy rates, suggesting that the film is resonating more with urban audiences drawn to slice-of-life narratives.
The film, which weaves together multiple heartfelt stories of contemporary couples navigating the complexities of love and relationships in bustling metropolitan settings, has received largely positive reviews from critics, praising its emotional depth, strong performances, and Pritam’s soulful music. However, it faces competition from Hollywood releases like “Jurassic World: Rebirth” and ongoing domestic films.
The true test for “Metro… In Dino” will be its performance over the crucial weekend. With positive word-of-mouth building, the film’s makers will be hoping for a substantial jump in collections on Saturday and Sunday to establish a stronger foothold at the box office and ensure its commercial viability.
