Himachal is still grappling with the effects of incessant downpour, and Mandi is one of the worst-hit areas in the state. High intensity rainfall has hit the area, leaving above 15 hours of uninterrupted rain, which has led to massive havoc in daily life and infrastructure. Not only this, with the downpour, schools, colleges, and Chandigarh-Manali Highway, one of the important arterial roads, are shut following numerous landslides in the area.
The recent update through 12 PM shows that four individuals were killed in Mandi, and there are at least 18 individuals reported missing, including members of a family who were drowned in flood waters on Gohar. Disaster response teams have so far rescued 100 people, and the operation has been coordinated.
According to the district administration of Mandi, 261 roads in the area are presently blocked because of landslides and debris, and connectivity has been badly affected. In the meantime, the schools and colleges are also closed down in the Kangra district as a precaution.
Intermittent overnight rainfall has also compounded the situation, especially in rural areas in the Kullu district. There are roadblocks comprising landslides and waterlogging on several roads. At Karsha village, close to Luhri area of Ani subdivision, a vehicle had reportedly been covered with debris after a flash flood flooded a nearby stream. Relief and rescue efforts are already going on.
The National Highway NH-305 (Aut-Luhri) is also very badly affected, with various portions made inaccessible by heavy debris and water flow, leaving several travellers stranded. Down the region, rivers and streams are at danger level.
IMD has issued a yellow warning to Kullu and surrounding regions advising the residents to avoid travelling and keep off rivers and streams. The management has also asked citizens to take precautions, and the rescue as well as disaster management team is on maximum alert.
