The government of Arunachal Pradesh has proposed to establish a special museum dedicated to Dr. Bhupen Hazarika in the district headquarters of the Lower Dibang Valley district, Roing, in a touching tribute to one of the greatest cultural icons in India. Promoted within the year of his centenary birth, it is intended to keep all the best of the legacy of the great singer, composer, poet and filmmaker.
This was announced after a coordination meeting held by the Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein at the Civil Secretariat on Saturday. Mein pointed out that the centenary celebration will be more than a tribute to the musical genius of Hazarika, but the values that he held dear, unity, inclusivity, and cultural accommodation.
“The fest will not only honour his music but also the principles he stood by, of unity, dignity and coming together of communities,” said Mein.
The proposed museum at Roing is likely to be a cultural storehouse with rare photographs, musical recordings, handwritten song lyrics and documents, audiovisual materials of the illustrious career of Hazarika. It will show his enormous contribution to Indian films, literature and social activism. Along with the museum, a commemorative book will also be published about his life-work, philosophies, and the book will be bilingual.
Having been born on September 8, 1926, in Sadiya, which was then with undivided Assam, the intense nature of Bhupen Hazarika in Arunachal Pradesh is a well-documented fact. He wrote the mass Hindi anthem Arunachal Hamara and shot the first colour Hindi feature film Mera Dharam Meri Maa (1976) of the state. His dedication to social justice, harmony and cultural pride could be seen in his work.
In the course of his multi-year career, Hazarika was presented with many awards, such as the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1992), Padma Shri (1977), Padma Bhushan (2001), Bharat Ratna (2019), and the Asom Ratna (2009). In 1979, his contribution to the unity of cultures in the area earned him the Gold Medal in Arunachal Pradesh.
