Kolkata: In a shocking development from West Bengal’s capital, a law student who was allegedly raped inside a college in Kolkata has told police that the accused not only assaulted her but also recorded the horrifying act on a mobile phone, threatening to upload the footage online if she dared to speak about the incident. This chilling detail, reported by media citing police sources, has added a deeply disturbing dimension to the ongoing investigation.

The alleged incident took place on Wednesday, June 25, within the premises of a law college in south Kolkata. According to the victim’s complaint, she was confined in a guard room on the ground floor of the college building, where the assault occurred between approximately 7:30 PM and 10:50 PM. The woman later confided in her parents, who then promptly lodged a complaint with the police.

Acting swiftly, Kolkata Police have arrested three individuals in connection with the case. The accused have been identified as Monojit Mishra (31), a staff member at the college, and two students, Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukherjee (20). All three were produced before the additional chief judicial magistrate’s court in Alipore and remanded to police custody until July 1 for further investigation.

A police source quoted by PTI stated, “She has alleged that the three accused had kept the mobile footage of the assault and threatened to release it on the internet if she talked to anybody about the incident.” In response to this grave accusation, authorities have seized the mobile phones of all three accused, which have now been sent for forensic analysis to determine if any such incriminating footage exists.

The alleged involvement of a college staff member, identified as the prime accused Monojit Mishra, and two current students has sent shockwaves through the academic community and sparked widespread outrage. Preliminary investigations indicate that Mishra, a former student of the institution, allegedly carried out the assault while the other two assisted and kept guard.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of the case, writing to the Kolkata Police Commissioner to direct an immediate and time-bound investigation. The NCW has also stressed the importance of providing comprehensive medical, psychological, and legal assistance to the victim, along with appropriate compensation.

The incident has also ignited a political firestorm in the state, with opposition parties criticizing the state government over women’s safety. Meanwhile, the ruling Trinamool Congress has condemned the incident, assuring that the “full weight of the law will be brought to bear” on those found guilty and emphasizing their commitment to ensuring justice for the victim. Investigations are ongoing, with police working to gather all evidence and piece together the full sequence of events.
