The Supreme Court on Friday rejected the interim bail application of Popular Front of India (PFI) leader AS Ismail, the PFI leader who is now in police custody under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Ismail had been before the apex court seeking an interim bail on medical grounds, which included getting a physiotherapy treatment. Nevertheless, the bench withdrew the plea upon assurance that sufficient medical attention, including physiotherapy, is provided in the Tihar Jail facility.

The brach of Justices KV Viswanathan and N Kotiswar Singh was informed by senior counsel Archana Pathak Dave, who was representing the Delhi government, that the physiotherapy facilities are available in Tihar Jail No. 1. She also stated that as per medical opinion such facilities may be provided in case required to Tihar Jail No. 3 in case it is anticipated by the petitioner.

The above submissions were observed by the court, and the case was deemed okay to be closed officially. The Supreme Court had previously refused to grant Ismail interim bail and wanted to know whether the persi-therapy treatment can be provided inside the jail premises.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had arrested Ismail on serious charges of radicalisation as well as sedition. Ismail, according to the NIA, was involved in instigating the Muslim youths against the Indian government and those organisations that do not believe in the establishment of Islamic rule in India. He was known to have been linked to the proscribed Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), been state president of the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) in Tamil Nadu and was a member of the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) National Executive Council.

The Supreme Court dismissed the request for interim bail as there was no merit in such bail since the charges are serious and appropriate medical amenities in custody have been confirmed; therefore, the plea was adjourned.
