Across India, the air resonated with devotional chants and vibrant celebrations today, Friday, June 27, as Lord Jagannath’s Rath Yatra commenced. Millions of devotees flocked to witness the majestic chariot processions, marking one of the most significant Hindu festivals.

In Ahmedabad, the festivities began bright and early at the Jamalpur temple. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and his family participated in the sacred Mangala Aarti, offered in the morning hours, where Khichdi was presented to the Lord. The grand Rath Yatra in Ahmedabad officially began shortly after 7 AM, with the three idols of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra seated on their elaborately adorned chariots between 5 and 6 AM. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel had the distinct honor of performing the traditional ‘Pahind’ ritual, symbolically sweeping the path in front of the chariot with a golden broom, signifying humility and service before the procession began its journey. The deities are expected to return to the temple by approximately 8:30 PM.

Meanwhile, in Puri, Odisha, the spiritual heart of the Rath Yatra, preparations were in full swing for the grand pulling of the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra, scheduled for 4 PM. Security was exceptionally tight, with a formidable presence of around 10,000 security personnel and advanced surveillance systems including AI-enabled CCTV cameras and anti-drone teams, ensuring a safe and orderly event for the lakhs of devotees.

Defence Minister wished everyone on the occasion through a tweet.

PM Modi also wished on the occasion.

Further west, in Udaipur, Lord Jagannath’s idol will be carried on a special chariot crafted from approximately 80 kg of silver, adding a unique splendor to the local celebrations.

Adding an artistic dimension to the auspicious occasion, renowned miniature artist Dr. Chandra Prakash Chittora from Udaipur has unveiled a special collection of artworks. Dr. Chittora has meticulously created intricate representations of the divine chariot using unconventional mediums like matchsticks and grains of rice. Complementing these unique creations, he has also compiled miniature booklets delving into the rich history of the Rath Yatra, devotional aartis, bhajans, and hymns dedicated to Lord Jagannath. Through his profound artistic endeavor, Dr. Chittora extended his heartfelt wishes for universal happiness and prosperity, truly encapsulating the spirit of devotion and cultural richness that marks the Rath Yatra.
