Lt. Gen. K.T. Parnaik (Retd.), the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, has urged a concerted effort of the governments in prudent planning and harmonious cooperation with institutions of higher learning as well as local communities in order to ensure sustainable development of the ecologically fragile zone of the Himalayas. During Monday evening, during the inaugural ceremony of the three-day national dialogue titled HIM Samwaad 2025, organized at the Golden Jubilee Banquet Hall, Itanagar, the Governor stressed the idea of health, water, and climate systems resilience in the wake of this growing burden promoted by a rising number of environmental issues.
It is organised by Sewa International with partners Riwatch, the state government, and various environmental organisations, with a focus on climate resilience, water security, and public health, which are detrimental to the Himalayan states.
Governor Parnaik, in his address, emphasized that the availability of clean water in the Himalayan region is not only a developmental objective but rather a survival issue. He indicated the dangers of climate change, the receding of the glaciers, and the unsustainable use of resources. He stated that we should keep our emphasis on creating resilient systems, opening access to clean water, and improving on public health.
Marking a milestone, the Governor has announced that the State of Arunachal Pradesh is the first State in the Northeast and the 10th State in the country to cover 100 percent of households in a State under the Centre scheme of ‘Har Ghar Jal’. He challenged the stakeholders to take the success story several steps forward as a means of ensuring all health facilities had water that was safe.
He also encouraged the incorporation of indigenous knowledge systems in governance and sustainability of the traditional day-to-day activities, which included traditional healing, farming, and conservation of water. In his speech, Governor Parnaik quoted the State Biodiversity Action Plan as an excellent example of how traditional wisdom could be successfully balanced with modern science.
He applauded the state of Arunachal Pradesh for becoming environmentally conscious by pointing out progressive steps such as the Pakke Declaration, the prohibition of single-use plastic, the GIS-based terrain mapping system, and the Anti-Drug App.
